Better safe than sorry is a mantra few follow
Given the attention NFL teams received by pulling out their prominent players late in the season or not playing them at all, one wonders why that...
EAGLE POINT — Wade McCready shook off misfortune and Brian Smith was collected under pressure.
That combination was vital in Eagle Point's 6-5 victory over Southern Sky Conference baseball foe Crater in a wild, back-and-forth contest on Thursday.
McCready and Smith both escaped bases-loaded jams on the mound, and Derek Tuttle delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit in the sixth inning for Eagle Point (6-7, 3-2 SSC).
With the Eagles clinging to the one-run lead, Smith relieved McCready in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. Smith promptly struck out Crater's Derek Cartwright and Corey Wynant to end the game.
McCready did his best work in the third inning, though Crater (7-6, 2-1 SSC) still managed three runs. He walked Bryce Crawford to start the inning, and Crawford scored on an overthrow at first when Craig Kathol laid down a bunt. Bruce Sanford then drove in Kathol with a double — one pitch after Eagle Point dropped a pop-up in foul territory. Andrew Tracy followed with a single and McCready walked the next two batters to force in the third run of the inning.
But McCready forced a fly out and a ground out to end the inning.
Eagle Point regained the lead with three runs in the fifth, the key hit being Tim Zomerdyk's two-run single.
Crater tied the game in the sixth when Wynant led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Tuttle put Eagle Point in front for good in the sixth with a line-drive single to right field that scored Dwight McLaughlin, though Deric Allen was gunned down at home to end the inning.
The Comets opened the contest with a home run from Crawford, the leadoff hitter. He sent a 2-2 fastball over the left-field fence.
Eagle Point responded with two runs in the second with Allen plating both on a two-out double to left-center field.
Allen was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Garrett Davis and Tuttle were both 2-for-3 with one run scored. Tuttle had one RBI.
McCready pitched 61/3 innings with five strikeouts and five walks. The junior was tagged for three earned runs and has now allowed just five total runs in his last 31 innings.
The Comets have lost four straight.
