BEAVERTON — The North Medford boys tennis team made a statement at the prestigious Jesuit Invitational at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center Friday.
The Black Tornado advanced its top singles player and No. 1 doubles team into today's finals of the annual tournament that gathers the top competition in the state.
North senior Colt Hoeptner had little difficulty getting past Elliott Chong of Lincoln High in the quarterfinals and Oregon Episcopal's Varun Lyengar in the semifinals. Hoeptner defeated Chong, 6-2, 6-1, and Lyengar, 6-4, 6-3. Hoeptner will play Natie Biggi of Jesuit in today's championship match.
"(Hoeptner) has been moving his opponents around the court, and he's been capitalizing on their weaker shots," said North Medford coach Hal Borg. "He's playing smart tennis this year with less unforced errors and a higher percentage of winners."
The Black Tornado top doubles team of Tanner Borg and Austin Schoenlein breezed into finals with an impressive quarterfinal win over Lincoln's Brennen Hoffman and John Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated Brendan Gibbons and Gram Leahy of Jesuit, 6-3, 6-2. The North pair will face Oregon Episcopal's Jason Stack and Ryan Nedrow — the returning Class 4A state champions — for the title.
Borg, a defending two-time Class 6A doubles champion, is playing with a new partner, Schoenlein, this season. Borg's former doubles mate, David Longmire, graduated last year. Schoenlein reached the singles quarterfinals at state in 2008.
