Better safe than sorry is a mantra few follow
Given the attention NFL teams received by pulling out their prominent players late in the season or not playing them at all, one wonders why that...
Picked to finish last in the Southwest Conference, the South Medford baseball team threw a monkey wrench in that notion Saturday afternoon at Harry & David Field.
The Panthers came through in the clutch in both ends of their doubleheader with Sheldon, earning a sweep with 5-2 and 5-4 victories over the Irish, who were tabbed for third in the SWC.
South Medford, predicted to tie South Eugene for fifth, improved to 10-5 overall and joins North Medford as the only SWC teams with 3-0 records. The cross-town rivals will square off at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at H&D. Sheldon dropped to 7-7 and 1-2 in league.
The teams battled to a 2-all tie in the opener until South Medford broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Max Britton hit a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Casey Kline and then Ben Higgins walked Steven Lines and Brandon Dollarhide to load the bases. Bo Walker followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers the lead, and Josh Havird followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2.
Jordan Lundgren shut the door from there, notching his third straight 1-2-3 inning to improve his pitching record to 2-1.
The Panthers trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh in Game 2, but Dollarhide provided a spark by reaching on an error and then stealing second. He advanced to third on a ground out by Walker and scored on another error off a Havird grounder to send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Lundgren singled and was sacrificed to second by Brett Reordan. Britton was intentionally walked and then Kline walked to load the bases against Zach Manley. With Lines turning to bunt, Manley's pitch skipped by catcher Wyatt Davis to allow Lundgren to score the game-winner.
