Six-run surge allows Eagle Point to gain split with Crater

April 19, 2009

EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point took advantage of Crater miscues in the second game of Saturday's Southern Sky Conference softball doubleheader to salvage a split against the two-time defending Class 5A state champions.

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2, the Eagles capitalized on three Comet errors and scored six runs to rally for a 9-6 victory.

Crater belted out eight doubles and one home run to win the opener 17-2.

Karlie Stephens stroked an RBI single to get things going in the pivotal sixth inning, and the rest of the runs came off errors after the Eagles (7-9, 1-3 SSC) did a good job of forcing the issue at the plate.

Stephens finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 2 and was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the opener.

Renee Murphy was 3-for-3 and Sarah Haga 2-for-3 with two doubles for Crater (5-9, 3-1) in the nightcap.

Brittany Reeves had a two-run home run in the fourth inning of Game 1 to help pace the Comets, with Emily Medina, Murphy and Kayla Hopkinson each belting a pair of doubles. Juli Kahut and Taylor Mackey also had doubles for Crater, which had 18 hits overall and nailed down the win with a seven-run seventh inning.

Reeves allowed four hits with six strikeouts in Game 1 and struck out five in Game 2.
