From student to teacher

When his clients began asking him tough, technical questions about eco-friendly homes, Medford realtor Don McCoy realized he had a lot to learn.

Two years later he's still learning, but he's also become a teacher and has emerged as one of the local leaders in the fast-growing world of green building.

Two years ago, he completed a training course that led him to become the first of 15 certified EcoBrokers in the Rogue Valley.

McCoy then helped get green criteria placed in the Southern Oregon Multiple Listing Service database and became one of the founders of Build Green Rogue Valley, a group of local green-build professionals.

Pursuing his interest in green remodeling, McCoy completed classes with the Earth Advantage STAR program (Sustainability Training for Accredited Real Estate Professionals) and became a trade ally through Energy Trust of Oregon.

McCoy has made it his business to share his growing knowledge.

In 2007, he co-produced a two-part program on green building for Southern Oregon Public Television, and he is currently both a student and instructor in a new green-building course at Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College called the National Sustainability Building Advisor Program.
