Medford man recovering after ATV crash at Oregon Dunes

A Medford man is recovering at a Portland hospital after crashing an all-terrain vehicle at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Coos County over the weekend.

Simon A. Rose, 23, was riding on the dunes with family about a mile north of Horsfall Campground near North Bend when the accident happened Sunday afternoon, Coos County sheriff's Sgt. Pat Downing said.

Rose was coming down a steep slope when the front end of his ATV dug into the sand, flipping him over the front and driving him into the ground, Downing said.

His father reported the crash at about 1 p.m. and patrol officers and the Hauser Fire Department responded.

Emergency crews found Rose apparently suffering from neck and back injuries, Downing said.

Bay Cities Ambulance rushed him to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay.

He was evaluated there, then airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, where he was listed in serious condition through Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. By Tuesday, he was in fair condition.
