St. Mary's golfers put themselves in prime position for a run at team and individual trophies in boys and girls competition, and the Phoenix boys and North Medford girls boasted similar starts Monday during the first day of action in their respective state tournaments.

Phoenix senior Daniel Engle proved to be the only local golfer to take a first-day lead. He shot an impressive 5-under-par 67 to open a three-shot advantage in Class 4A boys action at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

As a team, the Pirates shot a season-low 319 to put themselves in position for a trophy (top-four finishers) in fourth place.

"It's wonderful for us and we're glad to be in the spot that we're in," said Phoenix boys coach Kyle Walker. "It's an unexpected treat for us to be in this position, but now we're in a position where we can go out and play (today) and maybe hang in there for a trophy."

Engle birdied his first three holes and shot a 5-under 31 on the front nine during his stellar round.

The brother-sister duo at St. Mary's of Alex and Aubrie Street also fared well on Monday, with senior Alex Street finishing tied for third for the Crusader boys after Day 1 with a 75 in Class 3A/2A/1A action at Quail Valley.

Cascade Christian's Mike McNall is only two shots off Street's pace, however, after shooting a 77 Monday, and both local boys trail leader Alex Harding (70) of Westside Christian.

Alex Street endured a rough stretch run that included a double bogey on the par-5 17th hole after a bad bounce on his second shot sent his ball under a tree, forcing him to take an unplayable lie.

"He was 1 over going into that hole and thinking he could make birdie and get back to even, then he ended up making double bogey," said St. Mary's boys coach Brad Bills.

Aubrie Street was one of several Crusader girls to shine at Eagle Crest's Ridge Course in Redmond, with the junior standout coming in at 75 to put her second only to Valley Catholic's Lindsay Harmon (73).

St. Mary's teammate Cassandra Carothers carded an 80 and is tied for fifth, while Moira Cain is tied for 10th with an 86. With Katie Wayman shooting 91 to put herself in the No. 20 spot, the Crusaders lead the 4A/3A/2A/1A team competition with a 332 — 21 strokes better than Gladstone and Molalla.

Buoyed by steady play from all four scorers Monday, North Medford's girls team moved into second place in the Class 6A team race with a 327 — just three shots behind leader St. Mary's Academy.

Junior standout Sunny Powers led the charge for the Black Tornado with a 76 at Trysting Tree in Corvallis, while teammates Abby Perkins and Katelyn Galante are tied for 19th overall at 83. Abby Mann is only two shots back with an 85, good for a tie for 23rd heading into today's final action.
