Summer job pays off big for Kendall
If ever there was an A-plus paper set to be written, it would have to be Ian Kendall's version of the ever popular "What I did over the summer"...
Cascade Christian senior Mike McNall was as steady as they come at the Class 3A/2A/1A boys golf state tournament, and St. Mary's senior Alex Street was right there with him as the local duo tied for fourth at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.
McNall carded a pair of 77s to finish with a two-day score of 154 to lead the Challengers, who placed 10th overall with a 705. McNall kick-started his final nine holes with an eagle 3 on the 10th hole, and later birdied hole Nos. 16 and 17 to highlight his second round.
Street couldn't quite match his peer's consistency after opening up his game to take a run at the top honors, stumbling down the stretch with three bogeys and a double bogey over his final four holes to finish with a second-day score of 79. Street opened with a 75 Monday and finished at 10-over 154, while his Crusaders finished in sixth place with a combined score of 680.
Both golfers were 10 shots off the pace set by Westside Christian's Alex Harding, who finished at even-par for the tournament. Catlin Gabel won the 3A/2A/1A team title with a 655.
In Class 6A action in Creswell, North Medford senior Hamilton Baehr improved nine strokes on the second day to finish tied for 39th with a 19-over-par 163 at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
Baehr shot a 77 Tuesday after carding an 86 in the first round.
South Medford's Brandon Bol had a 36-hole total of 170, which placed him tied for 65th. The Panther junior recorded rounds of 87 and 83.
Nick Chianello of Centennial and Tigard's Arthur Kim tied for the individual championship with an even-par 144. South Eugene won the 6A team title with a 615.
Ashland's Michael Wurzell paced the locals in the 5A state tournament at Emerald Valley, backing an opening-round 86 with an 81 on Tuesday to finish tied for 23rd with a 167. The Grizzlies finished ninth as a team with a combined score of 706 in the two-day event.
Eagle Point's Hunter DeLange and Tanner Scott tied for 42nd at 174, while teammate Travis Hawthorne finished 65th (188).
West Albany's Nick Sherwood won the individual title with a 4-over 148, and his team also won the 5A crown with a 624.
