Gaviglio tosses complete-game shutout

STANFORD, Calif. — Freshman Sam Gaviglio tossed Oregon State's first complete-game shutout in more than three years Friday night, holding Stanford to just three hits in a 5-0 win over Stanford at Sunken Diamond.

Gaviglio allowed singles in the second, third and fourth innings. He retired the last 16 batters he faced and struck out seven while walking none. In his last 29 innings, Gaviglio has walked one.

The complete-game shutout is the Beavers' first in more than three years. Jonah Nickerson was the last Beavers pitcher to go the distance and keep his opponent off the board. He did so against Nevada on March 4, 2006.

The Ashland native improved to 9-1. Though official historical records are incomplete, it is believed to be an Oregon State freshman record for wins in a single season.

"Sam had an excellent outing," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "He threw strikes, mixed his pitches and certainly was confident on the mound. Tonight's game was indicative of the season he has had."

Gaviglio has now won his last six decisions, with three coming in the month of May. He came into Friday night's game with an ERA of 3.38. He dropped it to 2.84 with the shutout of the Cardinal. He has a 1.88 ERA and three wins in Pac-10 play this season.

Michael Miller was the lone Beaver with a multiple-hit effort in the win. He singled twice, hit a triple and scored two of the Beavers' five runs.

Oregon State (34-16 overall, 14-11 Pac-10) jumped on Stanford (29-24, 12-13) early. Miller tripled to start the game, then watched as Joey Wong reached on a walk. Wong, the starting shortstop, moved to second on a wild pitch, then watched Miller get driven in by Adalberto Santos when he grounded out to short.

OSU went up 2-0 two batters later when a wild pitch from Stanford starter Jordan Pries got past catcher Zach Jones and enabled Wong to come in from third.

The Beavers made it 3-0 in the second when Miller drove a ball through the right side, scoring Medford native Rob Folsom. Folsom started off the inning with a single of his own and eventually moved to second on a John Tommasini groundout.

With Gaviglio in control, the Beavers put insurance runs on the board in the seventh and eighth innings to go up 5-0. In the seventh, Ryan Ortiz drove in Miller with a sacrifice fly to right. In the eighth, Jared Norris, who started the inning with a single up the middle, scored on a wild pitch by Stanford reliever Danny Sandbrink.

Oregon State and Stanford continue the three-game series at 6 p.m. today.

ARIZONA 3, OREGON 1 — At Eugene, Arizona's Preston Guilmet recorded 12 strikeouts and the Wildcats rallied from an early one-run deficit at PK Park.

Oregon's ace, right-hander Erik Stavert (5-6), tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Stavert went eight innings for the fourth time this season, allowing just three runs on six hits.

The Ducks (14-40, 4-21) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Kenny Bartz's RBI triple.

Arizona (28-25, 11-14) grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the top of third as Jett Bandy hammered a two-out, two-run double to the right center gap, scoring Bryce Ortega and Dillon Baird.

The Wildcats built their lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Steve Selsky belted a two-out solo home run over the wall in left.

Jason Stoffel earned the save for the Wildcats, his 10th of the season, after recording the final two outs of the game.
