6A hoops tourneys move to same site

PORTLAND — The Class 6A high school boys basketball tournament is returning to Portland.

The Oregon School Activities Association executive board on Monday unanimously approved the Rose Garden as the home of both the 6A boys and girls tournaments next March.

The girls tournament had been at the University of Portland since 1983, but the school recently notified the OSAA that it no longer wanted to be the host site.

OSAA executive director Tom Welter noted in a press release that all but seven of the state's 46 6A schools are located between Portland and Salem, so the move is expected to lessen travel costs for the majority of schools.

The OSAA moved what was then the 4A boys tournament from Portland's Memorial Coliseum to Eugene in 2004 as part of a multi-sport, multi-year agreement with the University of Oregon. The Coliseum had hosted the tournament for 38 consecutive years beginning in 1966.

McArthur Court will continue to serve as an OSAA basketball venue, hosting the 5A boys and girls state championships.

Combining genders at the association's two largest classifications brings 6A and 5A in line with 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A, which have played simultaneous tournaments at the same site for years.
