Crater's Turituri accounts for six TDs

September 19, 2009

LAKE OSWEGO — Last season, there were times the Crater football team lacked offensive firepower and had to rely too much on its defense.

So far this year, the Comets' defense has again been solid but its offense — in particular the passing game — has taken tremendous strides and it showed on Friday.

The Comets (2-1) rolled to a 44-13 victory over host Lakeridge, propelled by the aerial assault of junior quarterback Tyler Turituri, who threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score.

Turituri hit Kelley Beck for two touchdowns, the second an 85-yarder in the third quarter.

Turituri opened the game with a 17-yard touchdown to Christian Massey and later hit Josh Dalton on a 42-yard TD strike. Turituri capped the 21-point first quarter for the Comets with a 68-yard run for a score.

Jacob Ziegler also caught a TD for the Comets, who passed for a season-high 309 yards as Turituri was 13-for-18 for 271 yards and ran for 82 yards on 13 carries. Ziegler accounted for the other 38 yards through the air when he connected with Turituri.

Beck had three grabs for 136 yards. Derek Cartwright ran just four times for 77 yards for Crater, which held a 35-0 lead at halftime.

The Comets' defense also grabbed three interceptions.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 41, EAGLE POINT 21 — At Eagle Point, Solomon Helms rushed for 247 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries to guide visiting Mountain View to the victory.

Helms scored on runs of 60 and 11 yards in the first quarter, and he added a trio of short scores in the second half.

Helms nearly outgained Eagle Point by himself. The Eagles finished with 281 yards of total offense, including 185 on the ground. They also lost two fumbles.

Austin Marlia and Jake Shaffer each rushed for a touchdown, and Marlia returned an interception 75 yards for a score in the final minute of the first half to cut the deficit to 20-13.

MARSHFIELD 35, ASHLAND 6 — At Ashland, Marshfield (2-1) used a 66-yard receiver pass to take an early lead on its second offensive play of the game and Ashland didn't find the end zone until the final play of the contest.

Moreover, the Grizzlies (1-2) didn't even find the red zone until the final play.

Mason Costantino had game-highs of seven receptions and 139 receiving yards, including his 41-yarder as time expired in the fourth quarter. However, that was the lone bright spot for Ashland, which finished with only 40 rushing yards.

Marshfield quarterback Kyle Tedder headed an option offense that picked Ashland apart, tallying 109 rushing yards on 16 attempts and 170 yards passing. The senior also had three touchdowns.

GRANTS PASS 23, OREGON CITY 14 — At Oregon City, Todd Woodrum barrelled in for two touchdowns and Grants Pass came alive in the second half to rally past Oregon City.

The Pioneers had a 14-0 lead at the intermission, fueled by more than 100 yards rushing in the first half. But the Cavemen (2-1) shut down the run and recovered three fumbles, finally pulling ahead on a Corey Ely 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Woodrum had just 46 yards on 16 carries, but found the end zone for Grants Pass' first two touchdowns.

The Cavemen put it away on a Jordy Romick 42-yard touchdown heave to John Tardieu in the fourth.

Romick was 8-for-17 for 107 yards.

BEAVERTON 41, ROSEBURG 20 — At Roseburg, Jamal Keuter passed for two touchdowns and ran for another for Beaverton.

The Beavers scored two defensive touchdowns in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

Roseburg (2-1) cut the margin to 21-13 on a pair of touchdowns by Derek Priestley in the second period, but Ben Cunha returned a kickoff for an 88-yard TD to put Beaverton ahead 27-13 at halftime.

Josh Weaver paced the Roseburg ground attack with 128 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown.

The Indians lost three fumbles and quarterback Thaddeus Davis had four passes intercepted.
