City fishing around Portland

Veteran outdoors writer Bill Monroe holds an undersized sturgeon caught on a well-tuned anchovy.Mark Freeman

It can hard to find places to wet a line when you're an urban fisherman living in the shadow of skyscrapers, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has come to the rescue.

In a six-page pamphlet called "50 places to go fishing within 60 minutes of Portland," ODFW has collected all the information a stressed-out Rose City angler needs.

From descriptions of each location, including the mileage and expected driving time, right down to the type of fish ready to jump on a hook, the pamphlet is a valuable source of information.

It sometimes lists the best places to fish at a given location, like "good bank access" at Barton Park.

And if the fish stop biting after your one-hour trip, you'll even find other recreational opportunities to keep you happy and busy. It's always good to know where the picnic tables and restrooms are or where you can float a tube or a raft.

Download the pamphlet from the ODFW Web site: www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/lets_go_fishing/index.asp. You'll find a wealth of other fishing information and links to the department's fishing regulations.
