MEMPHIS — Heavyweight Mike Wilson improved his professional boxing record to 3-0 with a first-round technical knockout of Sugi Foxx Tuesday.
The Central Point fighter took the ring with only two days rest following a bout Saturday night in Tunica, Miss.
Wilson, who got a relatively late start professionally because of a lengthy amateur career — which included two national championships — hopes to fight as often as is feasible to build his resumé.
Foxx, from Monroe, La., was bigger but far slower than Wilson.
"The bell rang and he came out throwing haymakers and I just worked behind my jab," said Wilson. "I backed him into a corner and went to his body, then I got a shot in on his nose. I might have broken it."
That took the aggression out of Foxx, said Wilson, and the referee stopped it 2:12 into the three-minute round. It was a scheduled four-rounder.
On Saturday, Wilson won a four-round unanimous decision over Larry Slayton. He came out of that one with bruised knuckles on his right hand, so he didn't mind a short follow-up fight.
"It gets a win under the belt," said Wilson.
He'll return home for a couple weeks before embarking on his next fight, perhaps early next month.
