The Ashland City Council has cleared the way for Ashland Sanitary Service Inc. to be sold to Recology, a solid-waste collection company based in San Francisco.
Ashland Sanitary Service has a franchise with the city to provide garbage and recycling service in the community. A city ordinance states that the rights to the company cannot be sold to a third party without the consent of the city government. The council last week consented to a transfer of stock from Ashland Sanitary to Recology.
The change in ownership for Ashland Sanitary Service comes as co-owner Gary Rigotti retires after four decades in the waste-collection business.
Co-owner Russ Chapman will remain with the business in a management capacity. The business will continue to operate as Ashland Sanitary Service, according to a city staff memo to council members.
