  • The Gross Frishberg Doggett Trio from Portland has planned its first Rogue Valley appearance to be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland. The jazz group comprises legendary pianist and composer Dave Frishberg, tenor saxophonist John Gross and drummer Charlie Doggett.
The trio plans a workshop for musicians in addition to its performance.
Frishberg is known for the many compositions he has added to the standard song book, Gross has been a West Coast favorite for years and Doggett is one of Portland's best-known drummers.
Gross has worked with the bands of Harry James, Stan Kenton and Lionel Hampton. These days he performs with the Gordon Lee Quartet, David Friesen and his own groups, Blema Bii and the John Gross quartet. He is the author of "185 Multiphonics for the Saxophone: A Practical Guide" (Advance Music).
Frishberg became known for his work with the likes of Ben Webster, Gene Krupa, Bud Freeman, Eddie Condon, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. He wrote the tunes "My Attorney Bernie," "Do You Miss New York" and the novelty hit "Van Lingle Mungo," the lyrics of which consisted entirely of the names of old-time baseball players. His songs have been performed by Rosemary Clooney, Diana Krall and Mel Torme.
Doggett earned a music degree from the University of Oregon, where he studied with Charles Dowd and Gary Versace. He has played with Versace, David Friesen, Darrell Grant and other artists.
The group will present Art Of The Trio, a jazz improvisation workshop for both instrumentalists and singers, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, also at the Old Siskiyou Barn. It's free to students, $5 for Siskiyou Institute members, $10 for everybody else.
The Art of the Trio workshop will be a demonstration and discussion on the inner workings and challenges of performing in a trio setting with three master musicians.
Tickets to Friday's show cost $25, $20 for Siskiyou Institute members and $5 for students.
