Bennion, Martin lead Crusaders

WALNUT, Calif. — In what St. Mary's coach Joe Volk called the biggest high school cross country meet in the United States, his top two runners shined Friday.

At the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational, a two-day meet with more than 100 races, Mary Bennion finished fifth in 19 minutes, 32 seconds. Teammate Morgan Martin was two positions and 10 seconds behind.

Kira Heyecke was 20th in 20:56, Emily Reeder finished 63rd in 23:39, Allison Hass was 79th in 24:46 and Jessica Clement's time of 25:14 was good for 82nd.

St. Mary's finished seventh in the Division 5.

Water Polo

ASHLAND BOYS, GIRLS ADVANCE — At Eugene, the Ashland boys and girls water polo teams both breezed into their respective state championship games with big semifinal victories on Friday at Amazon Pool.

The boys, who defeated North Eugene 16-6, will face Cottage Grove for the state crown at noon today. The girls will take on North Eugene at 11 a.m. today after derailing Marist, 17-5.

Ashland's Wynn Michaels paced the boys with five goals with Lucas Opgenorth and Forrest Kollar each tallying four. Goalie Willis Plummer recorded five saves.

For the Ashland girls, Kallie Walker notched eight goals and Smith Freeman tacked on five more. Carlee Santee made 15 stops in goal.

Volleyball

PROSPECT 3, GILCHRIST 2 — At Prospect, Prospect averted Gilchrist's rally to finish Mountain Valley League play with a 28-26, 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 15-8 victory.

The third-seeded Cougars (11-4, 8-4 MVL) took over early in the fifth game to secure the win. Prospect will face No. 2 seed Gilchrist in the district tournament on Oct. 31.

Keirstyn Anderson served 11-for-13 to go with five aces, 14 kills and three blocks for the Cougars, who received a 15-for-16 effort from the service line from Heather Lass.
