A strong cold front sweeping into Southern Oregon this afternoon and evening will send temperatures plummeting.
The cold, wet weather will drop snow levels to about 3,000 feet by daybreak Tuesday, said a hazardous weather outlook issued this morning by the National Weather Service office in Medford.
Snow levels will linger at about 7,000 feet this afternoon, then drop to 4,500 feet this evening and continue down overnight.
One to 2 inches of snow is expected at elevations between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, with up to 4 inches accumulating at some locations above 5,000 feet, the outlook said. All major passes — including Siskiyou Summit, Green Springs, Highway 140 by Lake of the Woods, Highway 62 near Crater Lake and Diamond Lake Summit — will see some light snow accumulation. Travelers should be prepared for winter driving.
Mountain snow showers likely will continue Tuesday, the forecast said. Another 1 to 2 inches could collect between the elevations of 3,500 and 5,000 feet, with up to 4 inches expected at Crater Lake.
Weather records at Crater Lake National Park show that the park usually has nearly 4 inches of snow by this time of year, but currently has no snow on the ground.
