Two local girl athletes signed letters recently to compete collegiately at NAIA schools.
North Medford volleyball player Darah Wonsyld will attend Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, and Crater basketball player Jenn Noon will attend Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.
Wonsyld is a 6-foot senior middle blocker for the Black Tornado, which is 3-5 in the Southwest Conference and clinched the fourth seed to the Class 6A state playoffs with a victory over Grants Pass Thursday.
Wonsyld's greatest asset is her experience, said North Medford coach Erika Wright.
"She's played quite a bit and put a lot of focus into the sport the past few years," said Wright, adding that the swing blocking system the Black Tornado uses will make for a smooth transition to college.
Oregon Tech is 3-11 in the Cascade Conference and 4-18 overall.
Noon is a 5-11 wing-post who is particularly adept as a 3-point shooter. As a junior last season for the Comets, she shot 39 percent from behind the arc and led the state in 3-point attempts, said coach J.T. Thomas.
Noon averaged about 13 points and 10 rebounds in 2008-09 and was first-team all-Southern Sky Conference.
Noon bolstered her inside play last season and since has focused on her ballhandling skills.
"She's added another dimension to her game that will cause people a lot of problems," said Thomas. "She had a great summer playing on all-star teams up north. In some big tournaments, she put up some really big numbers."
Noon will join ex-Crater player Kenna Reiter at LCSC. Reiter is a junior point guard for the Warriors, who have been picked to win the Frontier Conference this year.
