Zaslow takes over as SOU tennis coach program

ASHLAND — Ashland native Ari Zaslow has been named the head women's tennis coach Southern Oregon University.

Zaslow replaces Jeremiah Walsh, who stepped down this past summer.

"We are very excited to hire someone with Southern Oregon roots," SOU Athletic Director Matt Sayre said. "Everyone we talked to had very positive things to say about Ari, and we are excited to see where Ari can take this program. He has a lot of tennis experience and a lot of energy."

Zaslow graduated from Ashland High in 2003, where he starred for the Grizzlies. He then attended Lewis-Clark State College on a tennis scholarship.

At LCSC, Zaslow helped the Warriors to regional championships all four years and a top-25 national ranking. Zaslow played No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.

After getting his degree in business administration, Zaslow served as a tennis pro at Shadow Mountain Resort and Ashland Tennis and Fitness Club.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to coach at the college level," Zaslow said. "I'm a big advocate of off-the-court training and stressing how to play as a team. This has been a very successful program in the past, and hopefully we can continue to build on that."

Southern Oregon went 9-1 last year and just missed out on postseason play.

Women's basketball

The Southern Oregon women's basketball team earned the No. 18 ranking in today's NAIA Division II preseason Top 25.

Cross Country

For the third time this year, Southern Oregon's David Laney has been named the Cascade Conference runner of the week. He also won the award Sept. 21 and Oct. 5.

Laney helped lead the Southern Oregon men to the team title at Saturday's Oregon State Beaver Classic. He won the individual race in 24:21.
