Whisky Creek Cabin Trail

A hike with children is usually more interesting for the kids if there's something at the end of the trail.

The Whisky Creek Cabin Trail will take you to an historic miner's cabin built in the 1880s and acquired by the BLM in 1973.

You'll start off from the Grave Creek trailhead, about 10 miles down the Rogue River from Galice, northwest of Grants Pass, and follow a portion of the 40-mile Rogue River Trail.

It's a relatively easy three-mile hike that traces the northern edge of the river passing by peaceful pools that can suddenly turn to wild and raging white water.

Expect to pass more than a few fishermen who use the trail to get to some of their favorite fishing holes.

Make sure the kids watch out for poison oak and, although there are bears in the area, the chances you'll meet up with one are pretty slim.

Fall is probably the best time to try the hike because the trail is dry and summer heat has begun to cool.

The BLM has extensive information on the cabin and the hike on its Web site, www.blm.gov/or/resources/recreation/rogue/historic-sites.php. The Oregon Wild organization has posted some large photos of the cabin and the surrounding area on www.oregonwild.org.
