St. Mary's, Cascade Christian take district titles

October 30, 2009

VALLEY OF THE ROGUE STATE PARK — Defending District 6 cross country champions St. Mary's and Cascade Christian repeated as the girls and boys team winners, respectively, at the district cross country meet at Valley of the Rogue State Park on Thursday.

The Crusaders girls, also the two-time defending Class 3A/2A/1A state champion, used a second, third and fourth place finish from seniors Morgan Martin and Mary Bennion and junior Kira Heycke, to win the district crown for the third straight year.

St. Mary's had the low total of 25 points.

Cascade Christian used a fourth and fifth place from Jenna George and Jasmine McDonald to take second place. The Challengers scored 52 points.

Ashley Baldovino of Lakeview captured the individual girls 5K title for the fourth consecutive year.

Baldovino's winning time was 19 minutes, 2 seconds.

Martin, a senior, placed second with a season-best 19:21, while Benion finished at 20:03.

"It was a great race for Morgan," St. Mary's coach Joe Volk said. "She ran with Mary for the first 3K and over the last 2K Morgan started to pursue Ashley."

St. Mary's five scoring runners all finished in the top nine.

In boys, Cascade Christian swept the top three spots to repeat as champion with 24 points. St. Mary's finished second with 49. It was the first time the Crusader boys have qualified for state since 1994.

Sophomore Hudson Eustace led the way for the Challengers by winning the 5K event with a mark of 17:15. Jared Nichols placed second (17:21) and Brad Arkens was third (17:27).

"I felt our top three might take the top three spots," said Cascade Christian coach Steve Williston. "But you still have to pull it off. A couple of our other kids further down stepped up."

Junior Julio Silva and sophomore Tate Jacobson were the top Crusaders finishers. Silva placed fourth (17:27), while Jacobson took eighth (17:52).

The top two teams and the next four-best individuals not on the first two squads advance to the Class 3A/2A/1A state meet Nov. 7 at Lane Community College.
