Oregon adds 10,000 children to health plan

Oregon officials say that more than 10,000 children already have been added to state health care rolls under a new law that's aimed at expanding health coverage to nearly every child in Oregon.

The goal is to cover another 70,000 children by the end of next year.

The health care expansion, passed by the 2009 Legislature, is one of the biggest in the nation this year.

Expansion will happen in stages. In October, families with incomes up to 200 percent of the poverty level, or about $44,000 for a family of four, were made eligible to enroll their children in the Oregon Health Plan.

In January, the state will subsidize premiums for children in families that make up to 300 percent of the poverty level, or $66,150 for a family of four.
