SWAT team at Ashland home; traffic rerouted in area

Police wait outside an Ashland home where a 27-year-old man is believed to have barricaded himself today.Bob Pennell

9:40 a.m. update: A Medford police SWAT team has joined Ashland police stationed outside an Ashland house where a shot was fired at 5:15 this morning.

A 27-year-old man, whose name has not been released, is believed to be alone inside the house in the 600 block of South Mountain Avenue, Ashland Police Chief Terry Holderness said at 9:20 a.m.

No one was injured when the shot was fired from inside the house, according to the Ashland Police Department.

The man has barricaded himself inside the house and negotiators are on scene, Holderness said. The SWAT team has been on the scene since about 8 a.m., he said.

Police have closed the 600 block of South Mountain Avenue to traffic and are rerouting cars around the scene.

Neighbors in houses adjacent to the home where the shot was fired have voluntarily evacuated, Holderness said.

Although the residence is near Southern Oregon University and other Ashland schools, police do not believe the suspect poses a danger to anyone outside the 600 block of South Mountain Avenue, the chief said.

“It's close to the university, but it's not that close and we don't really see any danger outside that immediate area,” he said.

Having a SWAT team in Ashland to handle a crime is unusual, Holderness said.
