Tax to aid Rogue River Fire District approved

The Rogue River Fire District will not have to trim its services after voters overwhelming decided to accept a tax to continue its current level.

The continuance of the option tax cruised to victory by winning 62 percent of the 1,603 votes case.

The Rogue River Fire District tax is 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, which would maintain current levels of services.

Those opposed to the tax only managed to swing 37 percent of the vote, with a total of 609 votes.

Rogue River Fire District Chief Ben Ramsey declined to comment on the outcome when contacted by phone.

The Rogue River Fire District station is located at 5474 North River Road in Gold Hill. The district protects a 77-square-mile fire district and a 200-square-mile ambulance service area around Gold Hill and Rogue River.

According to the district's Web site, it serves a population of approximately 14,000. The bulk of its 1,500 alarms per year are medically related.

Personnel respond out of the single fire station, which houses three engines, two water tenders, three ambulances and one brush unit.
