Hidden Valley earns bid to state in shootout

November 04, 2009

MURPHY — Caleb Aldstadt came up with three saves in a boys soccer shootout between Hidden Valley and North Valley to help his Mustangs earn the Skyline Conference's No. 3 seed to the state playoffs with a 1-0 triumph.

After the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime, Tuesday's conference playoff had to be determined by a shootout.

The teams tied 3-3 after the first round of five shooters, with Hidden Valley denied on its first two attempts against North Valley goalie Kristofer Wessels before netting three straight to send the match into a sudden-death shootout. Cody Jones, Kevin Payne and Mitch Matheny were the scorers for the Mustangs.

Kyle Nelson scored for Hidden Valley but the Knights had an answer to send things to a seventh shooter, and Robin Klimczak stepped up and was equal to the task with a shot into the net. Aldstadt then came up with his third and final save of the shootout to clinch the victory.

Hidden Valley will next face Molalla in the first round of the state playoffs at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Top-ranked Phoenix is the Skyline's top seed, with Henley earning the No. 2 spot.

District 6

NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY 1 — At Klamath Falls, after Henley handed North Valley two District 6 losses this season, Natalie Goens and the Knights stepped up and stole the conference's second seed from the Hornets in a state-playoff seeding game.

The Knights (11-5), who took fourth in the District 6, will face host Molalla in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Goens, a forward who has filled in for injured goalkeeper Morgan Miller over the past three games, had her best performance in goal with 14 saves.

Courtney Durham broke a 1-all tie in the 39th minute for North Valley on a pass from her sister Trisha Durham and Goens did the rest in the second half.

The Knights' Nicole Goens dribbled from midfield past three defenders to the goal for the first score of the game.

Henley's Jordin Scholer tied the game in the 22nd minute off a pass from Brooke Stewart.
