Charter school expands

Armadillo Technical Institute, a charter school in the Phoenix-Talent School District, will be able to expand its general equivalency degree and evening programs and provide child care for student parents thanks to the acquisition of two duplexes next door.

The duplexes, each about 200 to 250 square feet, were purchased for about $500,000 using existing funds and a bank loan, says co-director Michael Warner. The duplexes are next door to the school at 106 N. Rose St., Phoenix.

An open house is planned from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

The first duplex will be used as a nursery for two to three infants at a time from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on school days and help the school expand its GED and other programs from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The second duplex needs renovations and will be put into use sometime next year, Warner says.

The 10-year-old charter school serves about 125 sixth- through 12th-graders from throughout Jackson County on an annual budget of about $830,000 Warner says.
