A proposed commercial and industrial project in Phoenix got a tentative nod of approval Monday from the Phoenix City Council.
Voicing concerns about overwhelming Phoenix's failing freeway interchange early in the meeting, council members decided late Monday to approve a request to change zoning on 35 acres owned by David Lowry along North Phoenix Road near the Fern Valley interchange. (See correction below) The council is scheduled to give final approval in January.
Lowry seeks the rezoning for a commercial and industrial development he calls Knollcrest.
Opponents of the development pointed out that traffic studies used in the request were based on maximum capacity of the interchange after it is replaced, a project the state hopes to start by 2012. They said it should have been based on capacity limits of the structure now.
