Former South Medford wrestler to be honored

Les Gutches, a three-time Oregon high school champion for South Medford, will be one of eight former Oregon State wrestlers honored in a banner-raising ceremony in Gill Coliseum on Sunday.

Gutches, who was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame last summer, became the first wrestler in the U.S. to claim national championships in all five recognized levels during his career. He won the 1997 World Championship and finished seventh in the 1996 Olympics.

A three-time Pac-10 champion, Gutches, who graduated from Oregon State in 1996, had a career record of 134-10, which is fourth-best in school history for winning percentage.

The ceremony will be during a three-way dual meet between Oregon State, Wisconsin and Boise State. The meet is designed to raise money for the Wrestling Endowment Fund.
