Trees will mark Talent centennial

In celebration of Talent's 100th anniversary, a community group has launched an effort to plant 100 trees around the town by November 2010.

The Together for Talent Committee also wants residents to plant 100 trees in the coming year.

"It was suggested by (former City Manager) Betty Wheeler," said Sharon Anderson, a committee member. "She had heard of another city that had done something like this for their centennial.

"We are asking business to step up and purchase trees ... mainly along Valley View Road and Highway 99," said Care. Talent Elementary School and city parks also will be targeted by the effort.

A Centennial Tree will be planted at City Hall on Nov. 2, 2010, the 100th anniversary of the city's incorporation. Citizens will be able to vote on what type of tree they'd like to see planted.

Trees planted by citizens during the year will receive numbers and be tracked on a map at City Hall. Engraved, numbered centennial stone markers will be available for purchase. A list of tree types that can be planted along roads on private property is available from the city. Citizens may plant other types of trees in their backyards.
