Man extradited from Israel enters not guilty plea in court

A convicted child molester who fled the county rather than serve a six-year sentence appeared Tuesday afternoon in Jackson County Circuit Court wearing prison garb.

Arthur Silverman, 70, was extradited from Israel on Thursday and taken to the Jackson County jail Friday where he will remain without bail until a resentencing hearing on Feb. 5.

District Attorney Mark Huddleston said the Feb. hearing will also include an additional charge against Silverman — failure to register as a sex offender — a class C felony carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a $125,000 fine.

Silverman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the additional charge.

Silverman was arrested in December 1996 for molesting two boys. At the time, he was working as a counselor with sexually abused children. The victims were not clients.

Silverman pleaded guilty to two felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse in 1997. Per a plea agreement with the Jackson County District Attorney's office, and under Oregon's voter-approved minimum sentencing law, Silverman was due to serve 75 months in prison.

Former Jackson County Judge Loren Sawyer, a critic of the new sentencing guidelines, instead gave Silverman 120 days in jail and 10 years probation.

Silverman fled after the sentence was reversed by the Oregon Court of Appeals, which also ordered his resentencing under the Measure 11 guidelines.
