Chinese New Year doesn't officially get under way until Sunday, but Jacksonville celebrates the Year of the Tiger today in its annual parade and festival.

Activities begin at 8 a.m. with a five-kilometer run and include the popular parade along Jacksonville's main drag at 10:30 a.m., children's activities at the Odd Fellow's Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. and at the Jacksonville Children's Museum at noon and demonstrations, music, talks and a puppet show throughout the remainder of the day. Jacksonville residents and members of the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association put together the annual celebration to pay homage to the Chinese who did much of the work to build Jacksonville during the 1800s.
