  • Another Medford furniture store will close its doors.
Scan Design, at the corner of West Main and North Fir streets, has notified customers it will begin a liquidation sale at 10 a.m. Friday.
In a letter to clients, company President Ray Mahan said Scan Design is consolidating its Southern Oregon operations, leaving Eugene as its closest location.
Scan Design said orders not delivered by May 31 will be handled out of Eugene.
Scan Design opened its 21,420-square-foot Medford store, featuring distinctive Scandinavian-style furniture, in April 1989 in the former Crater Lake Ford location.
Mahan declined to discuss the circumstances of the decision, although the stalled Bella Vita condominium project across Main Street has reduced expected economic activity in the area.
Joseph Winans Furniture Co., across Fir Street from Scan Design, announced last month that it will close after 32 years. Owner Joe Pedrojetti said the decline of construction and the downturn in the real estate market hit furniture stores particularly hard.
McMahan's Furniture on Barnett Road closed in 2008.
Bellevue, Wash.-based Scan Design was founded by Jens Bruun in 1964 and gradually added locations in Washington, Oregon and Hawaii. Bruun died in 2002.
There will be five stores in Washington and Oregon after the Medford operation ceases. Mahan indicated another store will open later this year in Washington.
