Searchers from Klamath and Jackson counties guided a pair of Grants Pass climbers down from the side of Mount McLoughlin early Monday after the pair veered off course.
Camon Fleming, 21, and Mitch Pronobis, 20, accompanied by a search crew of 15, reached the mountain trailhead at about 4:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Klamath County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Tim Evinger said in the release that Fleming called 9-1-1 at about 8:37 p.m. Sunday and said he and Pronobis had lost the trail in snow on their way down the mountain.
A Klamath County search manager contacted Fleming by phone and was able to provide directions to the pair based on a global positioning system, or GPS, location from Fleming's phone, the news release said.
Fleming and Pronobis tried to descend the mountain themselves after talking with the sheriff's office, but rescuers advised them to stay put on the rough terrain as their cell phone and flashlight batteries died, the release said.
