Mother and children need help putting lives back together

Editor's note: Light One Candle is an annual series sponsored by the Mail Tribune that focuses on an individual, group or agency that could use a helping hand during the holiday season. Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. The series continues daily until Dec. 22.

Toys and household goods, including a couple of pans for a little holiday baking, will help this mom and her two kids.

Twenty-nine-year-old Susan thought she had the perfect life. A loving husband and two beautiful children.

But several years into the marriage, things started to change.

Her husband became more and more violent. At one point he threatened to kill his family and even put a gun to his head and said he would kill himself if she ever left.

Fearful and afraid, Susan managed to find the courage to leave him and flee to a family that could help them, leaving everything behind.

Susan has done everything she can to pick up the pieces and start over for her family. She sought help through the Department of Human Services and the Job Council.

She was able to get her own place with the limited money she had saved up.

Currently Susan is working toward completing her GED and is involved in gaining work experience.

Her children are thriving in their safe surroundings.

Darrick, 4, loves books and anything to do with sea life. Celina, 2, is an independent little girl who loves to play dress-up in her mother's clothes.

The family has only a bed and a few dishes. They could also use pots, pans, and linens. Susan says she would love to have a few baking pans so she can bake for the holidays.

If you can help, please call Wendy, a family intervention specialist at the Job Council, at 541-774-5951.
