  • After 10 years, Rosario's owners Mike and Laura Hogan wrested the title of Best Italian restaurant from another much-loved Medford establishment.
"We've always lost by one or two votes every year," says Mike Hogan.
A longtime favorite, the 36-year-old deli-turned-trattoria at 2221 W. Main St. has played second fiddle to Vinny's Italian Kitchen since the annual Readers' Choice poll began. But this year, readers rewarded Rosario's Italian Restaurant for its lunch-sized pastas under $9 and dinners with soup or salad and garlic bread for $16.50 or less.
"We try to use some of the better pasta ... that's part of what makes us unique," says Hogan.
A wood-fired pizza oven and, more recently, gluten-free crust distinguish Rosario's from other local Italian eateries. Whether it's spaghetti or squash ravioli, recipes have come from Laura Hogan's family in Italy since the Hogans purchased Rosario's in 2001.
Other favorites: Vinny's and Olive Garden, both of Medford.
