  • Medford's longest-running shoe store, Norris Shoes, is this year's top place to buy footwear.
The downtown store, marked by big brass footprints on the sidewalk at 221 E. Main St., has been a perennial favorite with readers.
The building has housed a shoe store since 1891, newspaper archives show. Bill Miller reported in his Snapshot column that cobbler Major Damon moved his shop to that location that year.
Norris Shoes can trace its lineage back to 1894, when Albert Tayler opened a store there. In 1908, he sold it to employee Corsa M. Kidd, who operated it until 1935, when he sold it to Aubrey Norris and Harvey Field.
The Norris family retained the store until 2006, when current owners Jim and Linda Heath bought it.
Other favorites: Macy's and Johnson Shoes, both of Medford.
