A 22-year-old Jackson County man is listed in serious condition this afternoon at a Portland hospital after being shot in the face.
Erik Dorey was shot in the early morning hours while in a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo at the intersection of Beall Lane and Circle Wood Drive, Central Point. The Isuzu is registered to Bobby and Karen Dorey, of Gold Hill, according to Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services records.
A woman inside the vehicle was also injured and taken to a local hospital, but her injuries were not gunshot-related, a Jackson County Sheriff's Department release said.
Erik Dorey was taken to Oregon Health & Science University, where a spokeswoman said he was listed in serious condition.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Carlson declined to confirm Dorey was the victim of this morning's shooting but said more information would be available soon.
Immediately after the shooting, law enforcement spotted a 2004 Chevy four-door vehicle traveling westbound on Beall Lane. When it ran a stoplight at Highway 99, an Oregon State Police trooper gave chase, a sheriff's department press release said. The vehicle continued at high speeds down Beall Lane and north on Old Stage Road, where it lost control in the 8200 block.
The car spun several times and fell down a 40-foot embankment; one passenger was ejected from the car and died at the scene, the release said. Two other suspects, also male, were taken into custody and to a local hospital for treatment; one has been released and arrested, the release said.
The Chevy is registered to a Martin Carbajal, according to California DMV records. A spokeswoman said she couldn't give out addresses but that the vehicle was owned by a Visalia, Calif., dealer and the registration had expired Oct. 8.
