LAKE OSWEGO — Mackenzie Kelton recorded 11 kills and three blocks and Meghan Higday made five of her seven kills in the third game, giving the Cascade Christian volleyball team a critical push during its 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 upset win over Westside Christian in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs at Westside Christian High on Saturday.
The Challengers (17-5) will play Burns in a state quarterfinal match at Lane Community College in Eugene on Friday. The Hilanders (27-2) swept Myrtle Point on Saturday.
Higday was 5-for-5 hitting in the third game and finished with three blocks for Cascade Christian, which finished 13th in the Oregon School Activities Association power rankings. Westside Christian was ranked seventh.
"We got the second game and came into the third like, 'Let's make a statement,'" Cascade Christian head coach Rob Kleker said.
In the final set, the Challengers led 20-16 before the Eagles (19-5) rallied to even the score at 20. Higday helped seal the win with a big kill from the middle.
Elise Gardner had eight kills and 14 digs, Haley Casebier turned in 31 assists and 12 digs and Kelton added three blocks for Cascade Christian.
VALLEY CATHOLIC 3, ST. MARY'S 0 — At Beaverton, Valley Catholic downed St. Mary's 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
Alexi Provost-Shean had six kills and four blocks for St. Mary's (16-8), which struggled with serve-receive against the Valiants (25-4). Valley Catholic finished second in the OSAA power rankings.
ROSEBURG 3, SOUTHRIDGE 0 — At Roseburg, Roseburg's Anna Bruns had 11 kills, Vanessa Bentley turned in 34 assists and the Indians (25-4) beat Southridge 25-21, 32-30, 25-21 in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
LIBERTY 3, ASHLAND 2 — At Hillsboro, Ashland's Shelby Minor had 14 kills and Megan Rodden added 11 kills, but Liberty prevailed in the first-round Class 5A state playoff match, 23-25, 25-15, 28-26, 22-25, 15-10.
Joy Harpham and Renee Lenthe had seven kills apiece, Cassandra Hall recorded 36 assists and 10 digs and Piper Cantrell registered 42 digs and four service aces for the Grizzlies (9-12).
Olivia Fidler added nine digs against the Falcons (20-12), who went up 13-7 in the final set before Ashland won the next three points. Liberty finished the Grizzlies off with a two-point run.
HIDDEN VALLEY 3, LA SALLE 0 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley's Bailey Bars turned in 13 kills and three service aces as Hidden Valley downed La Salle 25-11, 25-17, 25-22 in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Mustangs (21-4) will next face Sweet Home (17-5) in the state quarterfinals Friday at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Elly Lengwin had 30 assists, Elizabeth Venzon recorded eight kills, eight blocks and three aces and Jessica Giurlani offered up 14 digs against La Salle (12-9).
ADRIAN 3, PROSPECT 1 — At Adrian, Taylor Bernhardt led Prospect with seven kills and four blocks and was 19-for-20 serving in the second-round loss in the Class 1A state playoffs.
Adrian (15-8), a No. 1 seed, used a variety of attacking options to win 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19.
Heather Lass added six kills and one block and was 14-for-14 serving, while Jessica VanWormer added nine assists for the Cougars (16-5).
