  • KLAMATH FALLS — South Medford captain Brandon Punsuk scored in the opening moments of a five-minute overtime period to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead against Klamath Falls and South held on to improve to 2-0 in Southern League hockey action on Saturday.
    Punsuk scored on an assist from Cy Jenson in a reversal of roles from South Medford's opening goal, when Jenson scored off a Punsuk assist in the first period.
    After Klamath Falls scored in the second period to go up 2-1, Ryan Lund netted an unassisted goal in the third to help send the contest into overtime.
    Johnny Lines needed to make only five saves in goal for the Panthers.

    BATTLE AT THE BORDER — At Crescent City, Calif., North Medford junior Reid Shipley won the championship at 170 pounds and was named outstanding wrestler as he helped lead the Black Tornado to the title in the 16-team tournament.
    Shipley went 4-0 on Saturday with two falls and two decisions. In the finals, he beat Louis Cosce of Hoopa High in California, 5-0.
    North Medford's Austin Mitchell (106 pounds), Matt Hogan (132), Jesse Ledbetter (138) and Kaden Johnson (182) each placed second as North Medford amassed 2131/2 points overall.
    Illinois Valley finished second with 187 points, followed by Grants Pass (165), Marshfield (154) and Hidden Valley (142) to round out the top five teams.
