  • St. Mary's turned up the defensive pressure early and defeated Phoenix, 51-26, in nonconference girls basketball Thursday.
The Crusaders (3-0) led 25-9 at halftime and limited the Pirates, who were playing their first game, to 11 points in the first three quarters.
A couple of baskets early by St. Mary's Emily Alvarez complemented the defense.
"We made some shots, and Emily made a couple of big 3s at the beginning to get us going," said Crusaders coach David Alexander, "and then we got out and ran. That's what we like to do, get up defensively and try to get some turnovers and easy baskets right off the bat."
St. Mary's wasn't without its own miscues, committing 29 turnovers.
Emily Alvarez had 12 points and five assists, Lillian Martin six rebounds, Rose Alvarez five assists and Alex DeBoer three steals.
