  • GRANTS PASS — Defending Class 4A state wrestling champion Henley won four individual weight classes and placed first at the 31-school Grants Pass Winter Kickoff at Heater-Newman Memorial Gym Saturday.
Host Grants Pass placed second with 1421/2 points in the two-day tournament. Henley had a 191-point winning total.
The Cavemen won championships from Casey Coulter (106) and Chad Lowe (195) and runner-up places from Luke Collins (145) and Ryan Shean (182).
Despite missing two-time defending Class 4A state champion Eleazar De Luca, Phoenix had a strong showing with a fifth-place finish (121). De Luca suffered a concussion in last weekend's Coast Classic in North Bend and is expected to be out at least through the calendar year.
"Almost everybody we brought placed in the top six," said Phoenix coach John Farmer. "It was a real team effort. We came together and got the job done."
Riley Dodd and Steven Sharbono were the Pirates' highest finishers with fourth-place efforts at 138 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Placing fifth for the Pirates were Richard Orndorff (106), Austyn Snow (126), Nick Renfro (132) and Kyle Bradfield (145)
"(Bradfield) was our strongest performer throughout the entire tournament," said Farmer. "He wrestled every match real aggressive."
North Medford received a championship effort from Reid Shipley (170) and Crater's sole title came from Chance Fahndrich (182). Shipley scored a 4-3 decision over Tillamook's Tucker Cook, while Fahndrich edged Shean 6-4.
South Medford's best finish was turned in by Tyler Thomas, who lost in the 120 finals to nationally ranked Ronnie Bresser of Henley.
Coming off a victory over top-ranked Kenny Dailey of Bend last week, Ashland 195-pounder Mason Montgomery placed third to pace the Grizzlies.

EAGLES TAKE FOURTH — At Bend, top-ranked Class 5A heavyweight Manny Valdovinos pocketed the tournament championship and six of his teammates placed in the top five of their respective weight classes as Eagle Point placed fourth in the Adrian Irwin Memorial Classic.
Valdovinos defeated Redmond's Jacob Brietling in a 9-6 decision to clinch the 285-pound bracket and continue his strong start to the season.
Also leading the Eagles were second-place finishers Travis Woods (152) and Johnny Wilkerson (182) and third-place finisher Orlando DeLaCruz (120).
Woods went 4-1, dropping only a 15-10 decision in the championship match. Wilkerson also fell just short of capturing the title, dropping a 3-1 decision to Brandon Ferington of Clackamas.
DeLaCruz won five of six matches, including a narrow 2-1 decision over teammate Eddie Perez in the third-place match.
Crook County won the team championship with 345 points. The Eagles racked up 217 points, just behind third-place Redmond (218.5).
SOUTH MEDFORD 2, KLAMATH FALLS 0 — At Klamath Falls, Terrence Cheeseboro scored his first goal of the season 30 seconds into the game and South Medford's defense made sure that was enough.
South's Taylor Rose added an insurance goal with 4:15 to go in the game, converting a power play to help the Panthers improve to 4-1.
South goaltender Johnny Lines had 10 saves.
