Greystone Court raises $100,000

Cash donations from holiday visitors to Greystone Court matched by three grants raised a total of $100,000 to help ACCESS Inc. feed the hungry in the Rogue Valley.

A challenge by Schnitzer Steel Industries of Portland netted $25,300 in donations from visitors to Greystone Court during its annual holiday light display, according to a press release. Schnitzer Steel, which has a metals recycling yard in White City, provided a match of $25,000, and the Schnitzer and the Kimmel family foundations provided an additional $25,000 each. Greystone visitors also donated more than 10,000 pounds of food during the drive, held Dec. 20-24.

Each dollar donated can buy $5 pounds of food.

Last year, ACCESS provided 2.9 million pounds of food to more than 8,500 families in Jackson County. The number of people seeking food support has increased by more than 7 percent from 2009-10 to 2010-11; one-third of those ACCESS is helping to feed are children.
