Pirates victimized by poor second half

KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix was hanging close to sixth-ranked Mazama at halftime.

But the third quarter was a different story.

The Pirates couldn't handle Mazama's pressure in the second half and dropped a 59-29 decision to the Vikings in Skyline Conference girls basketball Friday.

Phoenix (5-2, 0-1 Skyline) trailed by five points at intermission, then Mazama went on an 18-5 third-quarter run to pull away.

The Vikings (11-2, 1-0 Sky) outscored Phoenix 37-12 in the second half.

Phoenix had 13 of its 29 turnovers in the third and shot just 2 of 10 from the field.

Senior guard Roxy Ramirez paced Phoenix with 11 points and sophomore forward Baylee Toney contributed six points, six rebounds and two steals.

HIDDEN VALLEY 36, NORTH VALLEY 32 — At Murphy, Monasha Goree continued to attack the glass for Hidden Valley, grabbing 12 rebounds for the second straight game as the Mustangs won their Skyline Conference opener.

Six of Goree's boards were offensive and she tallied nine points. She had nine offensive rebounds in Hidden Valley's previous game against Sweet Home.

Jenna King led the Mustangs (2-12, 1-0 Skyline) with 13 points and Morgan Hansen added 12.

North Valley was led by Kylie McElheran's 11 points.

Coulter poured in a personal best 22 points while Alli Ehrhardt nearly completed a triple-double with 14 points and career-highs of 14 rebounds and nine steals.

The Chieftains (9-4) outscored Bonanza 27-4 in the opening quarter with Coulter scoring nine and Ehrhardt recording eight.

Emily Roldan and Ariana Lee scored 10 points apiece for the Chieftains.
