  • ASHLAND — Local swimmers left little doubt that this is a banner year for the sport in the high school ranks.
A whopping nine meet records were broken by five competitors in the 10th annual All-Rogue Valley Meet at the Southern Oregon University pool on Saturday.
"This meet is fairly young relative to some events," said meet director Jim Heath, the Phoenix head coach. "But it's been around 10 years and we've seen a lot of fast swimmers go through here, but these are some of the fastest swimmers we've had in here, obviously, and in my 15 years here."
Cascade Christian's Breanna Sapienza and Aaron Ghiglieri each set two marks, as did South Medford's Sarah Reierson and Ashland's Kai Staal. South's Kaylee Cooper established the other mark.
North Medford's girls edged their South Medford counterparts for the team title, scoring 220 points to the Panthers' 213.
"We didn't have a single first place for the whole meet," said North Medford coach Robert Dilansa, "but we collected enough points for the girls to win and the guys to place fourth, so we're pretty pleased."
Grants Pass claimed the boys championship with 312 points to runner-up Ashland's 232.
First-year South Medford coach Daryl Armstead was at the meet with the Panthers, even though he resigned the day before, citing personal reasons, said school athletic director Dennis Murphy. Murphy said the vacant position would be addressed Monday.
Sapienza has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100-meter butterfly, so it wasn't a surprise she reset the yardage version of that race. She, along with Ghiglieri and Reierson, competed last month at the junior national championships.
"I'd say it's across the board," Heath said of the talent level of swimmers locally. "You've got those kids who are national level swimmers, a few who are in between that are great high school swimmers, then a ton of new kids to the sport."
The meet usually attracts about 200 participants, but this year had 250 from nine schools.
Sapienza, a sophomore, notched records in the 100 fly in 57.20 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 58.61 seconds.
Ghiglieri, a senior, established marks in the 200 free (1:45.85) and the 100 fly (50.84).
The senior Reierson broke her own records in the 200 individual medley relay (2:16.60) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.37), which also eclipsed the Panthers' school record, set in 2008 by Melissa Ghiglieri.
Staal, a senior, broke the oldest record in on the books when he set the 50 free mark at 22.20 seconds. The old record belonged to Arron Nelson of Ashland, who went 22.32 in the inaugural meet in 2003. Staal's other record was in the 100 breast (1:02.47).
The record by Cooper, a sophomore, was in the 500 free, with a time of 5:33.32.
Jeoff Underwood of Phoenix won the 200 IM (2:09.10) and was second in the 100 breast, but the latter time of 1:06.81 broke the school record held by Heath's son, Justin.
