  • Eagle Point edged North Medford 35-34 in a nonconference wrestling dual that came down to the wire at North Medford High on Wednesday.
    In need of a pin to give his team the lead, North Medford's Colby Deskins defeated Kaden Crandall via major decision 15-5 in the 138-pound bout. Travis Woods' forfeit victory in the final match of the night sealed the win for the Eagles.
    Austin Mitchell (106), Kaden Johnson (170), Dakota Greenwade (182) and Reid Shipley (195) all had pins for the Black Tornado, which dropped to 1-3 in duals. Shipley again jumped up in weight classes, this time dispatching EP's Trevor Olsen, ranked No. 2 in 5A at 195, in 4:55.
    Eagle Point's Manny Valdovinos, ranked No. 1 at the 5A level as a heavyweight, scored a 2-1 win over Marlon Campos, No. 4 at the 6A level, to highlight the action for the Eagles.

    PHOENIX EARNS SWEEP — At Murphy, Phoenix's Riley Dodd scored a pair of falls at 138 pounds to highlight a strong showing by the Pirates as they swept a three-way meet with North Valley and host Hidden Valley. Phoenix beat the Knights 52-15 and the Mustangs 42-30.
    Dodd, a returning state qualifier, pinned North Valley's Dylan Dupont in 2:42 but the highlight of his night was during a tight match with fifth-ranked Josh Marshall of Hidden Valley. Dodd and Marshall were tied at 6-all when the Phoenix senior took the advantage and ultimately earned a pin in 5:21.
    Phoenix improved to 3-1 with the Skyline Conference sweep.

    NORTH GIRLS, GP BOYS PREVAIL — North Medford's girls team capped a strong regular season by improving to 6-1 in dual meets with a 108-59 victory over visiting Grants Pass at the Medford YMCA. The Cavemen won all but one event to claim the boys dual meet, 108-62.
    Grace Jovanovic paced the Black Tornado girls with a pair of individual wins in the 100 fly (1:00.61) and 100 breast (1:14.41) to go with relay team victories in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

    CRATER 9, NORTH MEDFORD 4 — Crater sophomore Dustin Gomez picked up the slack for injured teammate and senior brother Daniel Gomez by netting seven goals and J.R. Keyser added two goals and three assists for the Comets in the Southern League win at The RRRink.
    Ali Havice and Thomas Gamble also had two assists apiece for Crater, which broke the match open with five goals in the second period. Alec Looman was credited with 34 saves for the Comets, who were missing leading scorer Daniel Gomez due to a separated shoulder.
    Zach Lillman had two goals for North Medford, which also got one goal and one assist apiece from Michael Fthenakis and Wyatt Spence. Eric Skogseth also had an assist, while Calvinn Casaday made 25 saves.
