Marcelyn Faye Bowles passed on January 22, 2012. She was an inspiration to all.

She was born on December 27, 1936, to Ruth and Urcille (Lee) Bowles, in Chico, Calif. The family lived for a time in San Francisco, Calif., and visited Ashland, Ore., in hopes that famous healer Susie Jessel could help Marcelyn's juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Marcie benefitted from Susie Jessel's treatment, and the family moved to Ashland. The healing community was central to their lives. Ruth and Lee ran a coffee shop next to the treatment room to serve Ms. Jessel's patients. Marcie was home-schooled and graduated with her class at Ashland High School on June 2, 1954. Her unrealized dream was to become a primatologist.

Marcelyn knitted, did fine needlepoint, and sewed her own clothes. She loved birds, and her canary, Rudy, sang to her daily. She also enjoyed games, concerts and plays, and occasional travel.

Marcelyn was active in the Methodist Church until a few months before her death, sending birthday, anniversary and get well cards to members from her home. Her abiding faith and courage and her wonderful Buddha smile brought joy and light into the world. She was a great listener and enjoyed visits with friends. Her devoted friend and caregiver, Kathy Carroll, and other close friends helped Marcelyn to realize her dream to continue to live at home despite serious health challenges.

She is survived by two first cousins, Eldora Walton, of San Lorenzo, Calif., and Carolyn Mandell, of Omer, Israel; and by an intimate circle of friends, Fayegail and Lance Bisaccia, Kathy Carroll, Barbara Droscher, and Lyn Strong. She also had a broad circle of loving and supportive friends in the community.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 175 North Main in Ashland. Memorial contributions may be sent to the church or to the Arthritis Foundation.
