HILLSBORO — Crater senior wrestler Chance Fahndrich settled for third place and Eagle Point's Aaron Lorenz finished fourth after solid showings at the Reser's Tournament of Champions at Liberty High on Saturday.
Grants Pass' Casey Coulter scored a 2-1 decision over Henley's Tyler Scott to claim the title at 106 pounds, while fellow Caveman Ryan Shean took third at 170.
Fahndrich was pinned in 1:07 in the semifinals at 182 by second-seeded Cody Crawford of Cascade but regrouped to earn a 6-3 decision over David Douglas' Ihog Odighizuwa in the consolation bracket. Fahndrich went on to top Henley's Phillip Morgan in the third-place final.
Lorenz faced a tough draw in his semifinal at 120 pounds, squaring off against nationally ranked Ronnie Bresser of Henley. Bresser secured a 10-2 major decision in the semifinal but Lorenz battled back to reach the third-place final with a 3-1 decision over Jeramiah Baker of David Douglas. McKennan Buckner of Crook County then edged Lorenz for third place.
Eagle Point heavyweight Manny Valdovinos faced a similar stiff challenge in his semifinal against top-seeded Jared Groner of Oregon City and just missed a spot in the finals when Groner scored a takedown to win 3-1 in overtime.
Valdovinos then dropped a 6-2 decision to Zach Gill of Sweet Home to drop into the fifth-place final against Joel Hunter of McNary. Results of that match weren't available at press time.
Roseburg was the runaway winner in the 24-team competition.
TIGARD INVITATIONAL — At Tigard, North Medford senior Marlon Campos dominated in three matches to claim the heavyweight title and help lead the Black Tornado to a third-place finish in the nine-team tournament.
The No. 4-ranked Campos posted two pins and a 5-1 decision en route to his title, pinning sixth-ranked Stephen Hordes of Sunset in the first round of the championship final.
North Medford's Austin Mitchell (106) and Tyler Crist (126) each finished second after falling short in the finals. Mitchell dropped an 11-6 decision to 10th-ranked Ian Rogers of Tigard and Crist was edged 5-3 by eighth-ranked Zarin Lucero of Sunset.
