CENTRAL POINT — Crater opened its nonconference dual wrestling match against Eagle Point with three straight pins and continued to roll in a 48-21 nonconference victory Thursday.
"For us, it was the start," said Comets coach Greg Haga. "That was a big start for us."
After the initial blitz came a trade-off of an Eagle Point pin and a Crater forfeit win, them Comets got two more falls.
"At that point we were already up to 36 points," said Haga. "That's the number you try to get to in a dual. When you do, you usually have a good shot at winning. Once we got there, I felt pretty comfortable."
Nate Walters opened the match with a pin at 145, rallying from a two-point deficit after the first round, and Cody Gray (152) and Chase Mackey (160) followed suit.
Crater's Chance Fahndrich moved up from 182, where's he's ranked second in Class 6A, and took on Trevor Olsen, the No. 8 195-pounder in 5A. Fahndrich won by fall in 3:22, then Comet Derek Turituri recorded a pin at 220.
"He's (Turituri) one of our newer wrestlers," said Haga. "He did a good job of going hard the whole time. He got real physical and got a good fall for us."
Another Comet highlight was Truman Winningham's 6-3 decision over Eddie Perez at 126 in a match that was tied 2-2 in the third period.
The teams are idle until their respective district meets next Friday.
