Spring bear tags for the Southwest Oregon hunt could be a tough ticket today as hunters gobble up the last few hundred of the 4,000 tags offered for this spring's hunt.
As of Wednesday morning, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife had about 400 spring tags for the Southwest Oregon bear hunt, according to Michelle Dennehy, the agency's Wildlife Division spokeswoman.
Today is the last day to apply for controlled spring bear tags elsewhere in the state, which increases demand for the first-come, first-served Southwest Oregon hunt. The agency separated the Southwest Oregon hunt from the other controlled hunts because of its size and popularity.
The Southwest Oregon hunt encompasses all of Jackson, Josephine, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties, along with portions of Lane County.
The hunt opens April 1 and runs through May.
Those who buy one of these first-come, first-served tags are eliminated from applying for a controlled tag elsewhere in Oregon. Also, those who apply for a spring bear tag elsewhere in Oregon are banned from buying a tag for the Southwest Oregon hunt.
Results for the controlled-hunt drawings will be available online by Feb. 20 at www.dfw.state.or.us.
