  • NORTH BEND — Cascade Christian's Aaron Ghiglieri and Breanna Sapienza had record-setting performances and the Phoenix boys and girls produced a strong showing with third-place finishes in the team standings at the nine-school District 4 Swim Championships Saturday at North Bend Municipal Pool.
Ghiglieri, a senior, lowered the record times he set in Friday's preliminaries in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly. Ghiglieri won the 200 IM with a mark of 1 minute, 54.64 seconds and the 100 fly in 50.14.
Sapienza also lowered her district mark in the 100 fly with a time of 55.34. The Challenger sophomore won the 50 free in 24.51 but was slower than her record time in the prelims of 24.30.
The Cottage Grove boys won the team title and the Challenger boys placed fifth. In girls, Henley was the team winner, while Cascade Christian finished eighth.
Sophomore Alyse Darnall won one individual event and finished second in another and set two school records in the process for defending Class 4A/3A state champion Phoenix. Darnell captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.95 and was runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:23.32).
"Alyse's IM was amazing," Phoenix coach Jim Heath said. "It was three seconds under the school record."
Kylee Burks, another Phoenix sophomore, picked up a victory in the 100 backstroke in a personal-best time of 1:07.67.
The Phoenix girls 400 freestyle relay team was also victorious with Darnall, Burks, Olivia Sanchez and Arin Fitch. The Pirates' time of 3:56.50 was a little more than a second faster than second-place Henley.
Jeoff Underwood was the Pirates' only boys winner. The Phoenix senior set a school record in the 100 backstroke prelims and posted a faster time (56.25) in the finals.
"Our depth helped," said Heath. "We had a lot of kids in the top 12, which is where you score. We certainly exceeded our expectations."
